Critter Capers

An iteractive mystery game!

I worked alongside Creative Others and Metro Van to design and fabricate Critter Capers - an interactive pop up, engaging users to solve the mystery of who stole Connie the Coyote’s lunch - while learning some fun animal facts along the way!

Project considerations for this included:

• The installation should have an engaging story

• The installation must pop up and be flexible to display apart or together on a table surface/surfaces.

• Installation must break apart, pack down and allow for easy transportation

• Installation shall have a protective soft case for carrying

• Installation should be designed with an intended life span of 4 years.

(Average of 6 uses/events per summer)

We developed a solution involving 3 main story/mystery boards that each provided a set of clues to the user. The boards were designed to pop up and be placed on a table either together or seperately around an event site. When not in use, the boards flat packed and could be stored and easily transported in a custom carry case.

All the fabrication was done inhouse. The boards were CNC’d from lightweight yet durable PVC panels, and custom graphic vinyls were applied. Several different hardware components were used on the boards to give them different mechanical movements for interaction.

Testing out the rope and pulley mechanisms on the Home Range Board.

A custom soft carry case was also designed and fabricated, so all the panels could be protected during transportation.

This video was provided o the client to explain the setup process of the boards.

The result was a set of visually aligned installation elements that could pop up at different events. Each board involved the user carry out a different physical interaction to gain clues about who stole Connie’s lunch.

After users made their way through interacting with all three boards, they could take a peek in the mystery reveal box and see if they guessed the suspect correctly!

This was truly a fun and interesting project to work on, with plenty of little mechanical challenges to solve along the way! Thanks to Metro Van and Creative Others for the fun collaboration.
