Scrap Basket

Art

Got too many plants from your new pandemic plant hobby? Hang them in style with this super quirky statement hanging planter. Created from an anxious desire to keep my hands busy in challenging times, this piece involved manually tying hundreds of small fabric strips onto a thrifted wire basket frame. This tedious process was meditative and calming, as I watched the curated selection of fabrics grow and form into colorful, intriguing clusters of different textures.

I love the combinations of textures and colours you get from grouping the different kinds of fabric together. I espeacially love the little strips of fabric that when stretched form fun noodley-like shapes. This piece halso reminds me of some whacky under-the-sea coral.

I was lucky enough to have this piece selected to exhibit in NEXT: 2022 Exhibit, that was presented as part of the Eastside Culture Crawl programing in 2022 in Vancouver, BC.

This piece repurposes discarded materials into a happy functional piece, reminding us that there can be fun and joy in whatever life throws at us next. Check out a fun little video of it below.

I hope this piece makes you feel happy. Embrace the lumps.
